The League for Public School Justice is a grass roots organization comprised of parents, students, & concerned community members. We are determined to keep SAISD Schools open and public school of choice for the surrounding community.

We believe Superintendent Duron and the SAISD Board are rushing School closures without engaging the members of the effected communities. We also believe some of the selected schools listed for closure did/do not meet the requirements for closure but have been selected for other projects. Closure of these schools is essentially evicting the students and banning them from going to a public school in the neighborhood where they live.

THE LEAGUE FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL JUSTICE

ONE BIG BATTLE, SMALL BATTALIONS

It is our goal to to raise public consciousness on SAISD's efforts to privatize our Public Schools. Joining us in our cause:

THE VOTE IS IN

All seven trustees voted to close 6 SAISD schools on the superintendent's list Spring of 2008.

1. Bowie Elementary
2. Carroll Academy
3. Cooper Middle School*
4. Horace Mann Academy

5. Pfeiffer Academy
6. Travis Elementary

(Cooper Middle school made the Texas Monthy Best School List,

sure let's close them!!!) .

Spring 2009 List of Schools proposed for closure:

1. Burbank H.S.

2. Brackenridge H.S.

3. Fox Tech H.S. (Fox Tech safe, for at least another year)

4. Carvajal Elementary

5. Knox Elementary

6. Tynan Elementary

The three recently added elementary schools are to be used for the Head Start program along with last years closed properties Carroll and Pfeiffer.  It is important to note that the Head Start Program contract expires 12/31/2009! Ask yourself (especially if you are an effected family) is it worth it to close an entire school and relocate the students of the community for such a short term agreement?

The next SAISD board meeting will be held:

Monday, May 18, 2009 Work Session

in the SAISD Board Room

Monday, May 26, 2009 Board Meeting

We should never be uninformed again.
