The PHNA will be hosting their monthly community meeting. We hope we can garner the support of community members who wish to stay abreast of our work and research dealing with school closure issues.
The threat is still imminent and the proposal the Task Force agreed upon does not include Burbank or Brackenridge as high schools. The Save Burbank Committee were present for this issue and will continue to be a thorn in the side of SAISD until we get some answers.
Please find the time to be a part of this meeting. We will have some documentation like Dr. Duron's employment contract, his resume, the land title deeds for Burbank, and other items which we recently acquired from the district.
WE NEED YOU TO ATTEND THESE MEETINGS. IT IS VITAL TO KEEP A LARGE GROUP OF EDUCATED COMMUNITY MEMBERS. PLEASE MAKE THE SACRIFICE TO BE A PART OF THE PROCESS.
We hope to see you there. Thank you.

7:00pm at Fox Tech

in the cafeteria

Just got a call a few minutes ago from one of the Tech parents who was at the Burbank mtg last Wednesday. The Parent got a last-minute robocall from the district announcing a meeting tonight with the district at 7p.m. (not sure whether in the auditorium or cafeteria).
The parent said it feels like the district already made their decision and SAISD is just going through the motions.
Pass the word along!

7:00pm COMMUNITY MEETING AT
PALM HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CENTER
Please come from all over the SAISD District to help support our schools. This evening will focus on Superintendent Robert Duron's proposal to close Burbank High School.
Palm Heights Community Center
1201 W. Malone
About the Burbank Meeting
The gym at the Palm Heights Community Center was packed in with listeners wanting information on the proposed closing of Burbank High School...this was a most pleasant sight. Most of the media outlets were present--great for the community.
What was surprising was Duron's gall to use the same shifty rhetoric he used last year to appear as if he is listening to all sides and being ...lines like, "the district is losing money," etc.
Follow the Money!
Some community members and the Fox Tech parent were outside disgusted with Duron. The rumor is that Burbank will be demolished to build a hotel. Duron sits on the board of the Westside Development Corporation.
City council people and other city leaders are on that committee, but no regular community people. We were encouaged to do our research, figure out where all this "kill the inner city" decisions are coming from and take it to the media.

Protest Registration of Young Women's Leadership Academy
9:00a - 10:30a
Fox Tech High School
637 N. Main Ave
San Antonio, TX
Members of the League for Public School Justice peacefully protested the closure of Horace Mann Academy, the neighborhood Public School while SAISD conducted a registration process for the Young Women's Leadership Academy. For any parent that experienced the travesty they called "registration" for our own SAISD students last fall this was something to watch. These hand picked students were treated extra special including Uniform fittings......I bought our last uniforms at Dollar General and did not see a fitting room anywhere. Perhaps when they talk about improving customer service in SAISD they should consider treating ALL SAISD students they way they did these girls this Saturday morning. Pictures to be posted soon in our Photo Gallery.

The media was there--fabulous. The media announced the meeting--also fabulous. Thanks to Rep. Martinez Fischer's office for their support in notifying the press and with for sticking it out with us throughout the process; And many Thanks to Trey Martinez Fischer, Tommy Adkisson and Ed Garza for speaking at this event. Special Thanks to Jefferson United Methodist Church for providing us the meeting space, The Horace Mann Jazz Band for the pre Community Forum concert and the Koffee Kup for providing refreshments. We are grateful to the representatives from Justin Rodriguez's office and Senator Leticia Van de Putte's office for attendance. It was unfortunate that none of the invited representatives from SAISD attended. A new face in the audience was a concerned parent from Bowie Elementary. Bienvenedos! We look forward to seeing representation from your area. Most important we want to thank to the community that did attend this Community Forum. It was our goal to reach out to you with information that may not have been available any other way. We hope we provoked you to think about what is going on in this and related communities and that you are moved to action. WE WENT TO THE DANCE! SECOND PICKETING OF EL MIRADOR
6p - 8p
It was First Friday and NCAA Weekend. THIS WAS MAJOR EXPOSURE FOR US TO A BIGGER THAN LIFE SIZE CROWD....WE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF OUR OPPORTUNITY TO STAND OUT. Turn out support from the Mann Academy, Travis Elementary and Carroll Academy Coalition of Defenders was outstanding. We conducted a peaceful demonstration to the sounds of a Jazz Band playing at the Filling Station accross the street. We circulated our petitions and had an resounding response. We caught the eye of a videographer from Univision Channel 41 and he spent time with a representative of each campus as well as some nice B roll shots. We even had guests join us in our line!

Saturday, March 15, 2008 THE PICKETING OF EL MIRADOR
The restaurant was chosen because it is owned by Julian Trevino, the president of the SAISD Board of Trustees. Trustee, Carlos Villarreal, Assistant Secretary for the SAISD Board of Trustees is employed by Trevino at El Mirador Restaurant. I wonder if either of them ever noticed they are both on the School Board? Or were they hoping no one else would notice? Conflict of interest? How can Villareal disagree on a vote and still collect a paycheck from his Brother Board Member/Employer?
As a result of our picketing we were told we upset some folks with SAISD and were asked to come to a truce. There is no suprise that they did not offer any consessions you would expect of a truce...in other words just stop and go home. NOT US!
